ASBESTOS AND YOUR HEALTH
The two primary health issues are related to asbestos exposure: mesothelioma and asbestosis. Mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers lodge in the lining of the lungs, causing cancerous growths.
Most instances of mesothelioma occur in industrial settings, where workers are exposed to large amounts of asbestos over a sustained period of time. However, the disease has been documented in short term exposure cases as well.
The latency of the disease is quite long, with most cases requiring 30-40 years to develop.
Asbestosis is a chronic inflammation of the lungs due to asbestos exposure. While asbestosis is not a cancer in itself, individuals suffering from the condition are at increased risk of cancer. Similarly to mesothelioma, asbestosis often has a long, multi-decade latency and is typically related to industrial exposure.
